Jen this is sooo good. Such an honest and reflective read and I related so much. This line got me: “AI didn’t give me more free time. It gave me more capacity. And I filled every bit of it with more tasks” 🤯
Can def relate to you with the ADHD and how it affects our relationship with AI. I’ve basically replaced Instagram doomscrolling with tweaking apps I’m building at 10pm..same dopamine loop, different packaging lol. So glad you took the week off! 🤍
Thanks Emily! I think people with ADHD have so much to gain from AI but what I’ve learned is I need to be a bit more careful. Love that you replaced IG with AI. And listen, I love the building after bedtime mamas I just don’t think it’s the right move for me right now.
You're welcome! And I completely agree. The tricky part with ADHD is that building at 10pm genuinely feels like the best use of time in the moment.. and then the next morning I'm reminded it was not 😅 I respect that you're drawing that line for yourself and am moving that direction, too. I need rest and time where I can just turn my brain off.
Ooooof I have been crashing out too, I’m with ya! Summer is such a change of pace, a forcing function for stepping back and questioning everything. I can see in my GitHub trend from last year that everything slowed down in the summer… I think that’s healthy.
Thanks for including me at Tinker Hour, I love the opportunity for feedback and brainstorming ❤️
Firstly I am terribly sorry you are here. It’s an awful feeling. I cannot recommend Emma Gannon’s My Year Of Nothing highly enough. It’s a short book where Emma recounts navigating her own burnout. Honest and full of research. It really helped me when I went through my own burnout
Okay I’m saving this to come back to and read/explore more deeply. Re: getting out of your head and into your body (yes, a thousand percent!) I’ve found that I really enjoy a mid-day intense workout straight into lunch… it provides me a good hour or so to completely clear the mind and I’m ready to dive back in afterward. First time in my life I’ve done a mid-day workout but it’s working for me!
Such a nice reflection, Jen! I’m glad you’ve slowed down this week and are taking some next steps to help prevent burn out cycles in the future.
I think it’s a good reminder that just because we CAN with AI, doesn’t mean we should. I have unintentionally slowed down with my time tracking app and iteration and I’ve been so pleasantly surprised when I do return to it each time that my fresh and relaxed eyes are bringing so many more ideas. I can see it differently than when I was more in a sprint in the build.
The AI tinker hour was soo fun and I’m grateful to you for hosting! 🩵

Let’s all agree that we are just gonna be at 75% efficiency over the summer because we are having a good time!

Thank you! I remember hearing of that book ages ago. I’ve pulled out of it now. Feeling much better and invigorated!

I love that! Yes, baking in an intentional opportunity to clear the slate

Yes, coming back with fresh eyes is always a good thing!
